Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT)

Check out our website: www.pennmert.org

The University of Pennsylvania Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) is a student-run service organization providing emergency medical services to the University community.   The primary purpose of the organization is to complement the emergency medical care provided by the University of Pennsylvania Police Department (UPPD) and Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) by providing professional, timely and high-quality pre-hospital treatment.   The secondary purpose of the organization is to provide training and education to both students and the community.

Since its inception in April 2006, MERT has operated as a quick response service at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level.  As a BLS service, MERT is able to provide oxygen therapy, stabilize major trauma patients, splints suspected fractures, institute artificial airways, provide ventilatory support and defibrillate patients.   Members respond on specially equipped bicycles that provide transportation from our headquarters (36th and Chestnut) to the emergency scene.  The bicycles allow for the transportation of necessary life-saving equipment such as automated external defibrillators, oxygen and other medical supplies for the treatment and assessment of patients.   MERT provides patient care until care is transferred to PFD for transport by ambulance to the hospital.

In addition to emergency medical services, MERT sponsors a semester-long Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class on campus for students.   Within the past year and a half, MERT membership has grown significantly from 16 to 47 actively participating members as a direct result of student interest in the EMT class. The fall 2007 EMT class will produce 20 new EMTs, many of whom will join the MERT program.

At the beginning of the program, MERT operated during weekend hours.   More recently, MERT has been able to consistently maintain a schedule of 7:00pm to 7:00am every day during the academic year.  MERT also staffs university-sponsored events such as Homecoming and Spring Fling.   During its hours of operation, MERT has responded to over 320 medical and trauma emergencies.
